Byju's & Messi - A Business Mystery and A Mess - #MindYourOwnBusiness

There was a rumor that Byju's would 'fire' away 25% of their employees.

Turned out the rumor was just a rumor ...

BUT they do fire employees ...

Not 25% but 5% ... BUT that's a massive 2500 people !!

2500 people lose their jobs. A seemingly heartfelt letter from the man in the center of the storm written to put forth his side of story. Gets praised for calling a spade a spade and talking about what real business is all about and gets a lot of flak for making that 'letter' all about himself rather than about the 2500 people being fired or his feelings for them.

And then ... Byju's announces Messi as their Brand Ambassador - an arrangement which no doubted cost them 'an arm and a leg along with kidney and several internal organs'. And the criticism starts all over again on how they have millions to spend on a 'foren/international' expensive Brand Ambassodor but not for their own employees .. in fact, they are getting one guy to be their Brand Ambassador at the cost of the livelihood of 2500 Families.

There are quite a few things happening here. And all are related. And yet, decisions for each one of them have perspectives and implications most of us cannot fathom.

It is easy to comment on or express our views on the overall picture 'as it appears to us' but extremely difficult to put ourselves in those difficult broken-glass-filled shoes of an entrepreneur who is being held accountable (and being pressurised) by the shareholders and investors.

While I personally don't like the choice between 'take Messi and lose 2500 people OR Don't take Messi and retain 2500' ... but the fact is that was that even a choice for them Are they even connected inside the business boardroom .. or are they 2 separate decisions connected only by the fact that they were taken by the same business in the same boardroom - but most probably in different meetings and conversations.

Now bring that analogy to YOUR OWN Life.

have you ever told yourself or someone else that you can't afford something useful (a training, a skill development program, coaching, regular health check up at your own cost, expensive "protective" eyewear or shoes, good quality bed) and then gone ahead and spent a bomb on an evening at the bar or bought a pretty expensive smart phone (90% of features of which you don't use) or similar such cost ineffective purchase???

When you do that, its easy for others to label you as a hypocrite !! Right ! BUT you have your defence and while others may say that 'you had money for the phone but not for that career changing training/coaching'; frankly speaking, in your mind, you never thought of those two things at that same time ever. Those were two independent decisions for you - unconnected, unrelated.

At the same time, you need to realise that it was not 'affordability' that stopped you from spending in one of those place, that's just an excuse you gave yourself.

So enough of bashing Byju's or any other person for the actions they have taken. Enough of comparing their different decisions. You have enough introspection to do for your own perspectives and decision. You do yours, let Byjus do their own.

To each one their own ! #MindYourOwnBusiness :)

Note: Byju's is just a case in point and in news right now so that triggered the article. This article is absolutely not about them. Its about You and Me (hope you realised that by the time you came to the end note)   :)
