Jackie Chan and ME :)

I have never been so much excited about meeting or seeing Bollywood stars (except for may be the first time I saw them). But this time it was different. JACKIE CHAN.

For me, he is not just a Filmstar …. He is a master entertainer and a great performer. He has been entertaining me (and of course, the world) ever since my childhood and I am all for a Jackie Chan movie even today.

When I read about Jackie visiting Kuala Lumpur to inaugurate his signature Café, I had a faint desire to take a chance and see him in person. Read more about his Kuala Lumpur visit and his café at this link …

As the day approached, the feeble desire was gathering momentum, bouncing on the insides of my mind. I finally declared to my wife that we will take our chances. The idea was simple. We go to the café opening function. We participate in the Buddy Bear Painting competition (You can read about it at above link). And hope to win the prize (my wife that is, I knew that there was no hope of my winning as I have already failed in ART subject in my school days). Winning the prize would mean receiving the prize from Jackie himself.

So with this plan of action and high hopes in the heart, we set out today morning. At arounf 11 am, we reached the Starhill Gallery at Bukit Bintang where the Jackie Chan Café is located on the top floor. We filled up our forms, made the donations and started painting the buddy bear. Jackie was expected to arrive at 1 so we spent our time till then beautifying the bear.

The painting competition closed at 1. Then began the long wait for Jackie in the crowd of spectators and media people which ended at about 2 PM when Jackie Chan finally arrived.

It was an undreamt dream come true

After the opening speech by Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh, Group Managing Director of YTL Corporation and a close friend of Jackie Chan; Jackie announced the opening of the café formally by drumming on a traditional Chinese drum. I must say … he is a good drummer too J

He then made the first cup of coffee at his café and the first customer was Francis Yeoh himself. He then came back to the podium to distribute the prizes. Francis and Jackie also announced that money collected through the Buddy Bear Painting competition will be matched 1:1 by both of them; in effect TRIPLING the amount.

Well, neither of us won the prize, but one thing did happen.

Our paintings got selected in the Top 50. Well, what that meant was that we both won a 50 RM Cash Voucher each top be used at Jackie Chan Café and more importantly our paintings had a chance to be put up on the Hall of Fame at the Muse Floor at Starhill gallery where the café is located.

So at the end of the day, I had seen Jackie Chan at close quarters (at a distance of 1 feet I would say, so close that I actually touched his hand in a half handshake) and returned home with 9 chocolate cakes from his café

What a day !!

The Train arriving in 31 seconds !

What will be your reaction be if you are waiting for the local train to come at the platform and you hear / see the announcement ...

The Train arriving in 31 seconds !

Well, first time i saw a similar message at the underground metro train station in KL ... i was amused. I felt it was more of a gimmick than precision. Everyday, reading similar messages off the display i no longer got amused.

Yesterday was different. Don't ask me the difference. I dont know. It was just different.

When i heard the announcement "The Train arriving in 31 seconds ! " yesterday evening, i simply started counting in my head 1, 2, 3 ... slowly ... timing myself at approx. 1 second intervals ...

Now i myself dont know why i did this but i surely did it .. an continued to do it ... 10, 11, 12 ....

I felt i was acting stupid but still i continued with a muted smile on my face ... 18, 19, 20 ....

As i crossed 25, the smile started to show .. as if i was going to disprove the announcement and win some grand prize ... 27, 28, 29 ...

As the number 30 flashed and resonated in my mind .. the smile n my face changed into a grin ... (i know some people were actually staring at me at this point ..)

ALo and behold .. my grin was in full width when the count of 31 resonated in my mind .... and suddenly there was a FLASH of the familiar Headlight of the train .... right in my face ....

The train HAD arrived in 31 seconds ....

And my Grin was replaced by a jaw-drop expression of disbelief followed by a stupid smile ....

I was smiling all the way to my home ....

Tongue Twister - V for Vendetta

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."

Arbit Choudhury – World’s First MBA Comic Character wins Manthan Award 2007

Arbit Choudhury – First B School Comic Character of the world, created by the duo of Shubham Choudhury & Hemant Kumar Jain has bagged this year’s Manthan Award for India’s successful e-Content for Development 2007 on. The award was given in the e-Entertainment category giving a major boost towards the need to develop a comical sense even when engrossed in our beloved work related pursuits. The award giving ceremony was held on September 22, 2007 at IICC, New Delhi and is given annually to promote usage of ICT at the grassroots level for innovation and ultimately e-Content development in the country.

“Arbit Choudhury” is a comic character which came into minds of two people while studying in a B-School. Fed up with the same routine for two long years, they saw the funny side of it and created a comic character on their lives at campus itself. With the corporate culture seriously upon us Indians, many of the people associated with B-Schools found an echo in the activities of Arbit Choudhury. It has become very much a part of B. School corporate culture so famous the spoof has become.

The project description : Arpit Choudhury is a typical 2nd Year MBA student of a leading B-school. His life revolves around all the daily chores of an MBA. Tests, assignments, presentations, competitions, case studies, net-surfing, chatting, ctrl+C, ctrl+V are as much part of his daily routine as food, drinks, friends are. He often finds himself juggling with the concepts of strategy, logistics, marketing, finance, etc. and tries (in vain) to apply these in real life situations. His wisecracks frequently have everyone rolling in mirth. Perturbed by his penchant for blurting business balderdash, his friends jokingly call him "ARBIT" Choudhury.

He is the first international icon representing the community of MBA students and the managers across the globe who easily identify with Arbit's humorous take on the idiosyncrasies of management world. He is an icon for all MBA aspirants, MBA students and all MBA pass-outs who 'experience' Management funda's and jargon day in and day out.

The creators realized that in today's internet age, the most effective way of reaching comic fans is through e-mail and web, rather than through print media. Hence, they decided to make Arbit Choudhury a full-fledged Web-Comic. The rise of Arbit Choudhury symbolizes the coming of age of Internet marketing. Arbit Choudhury belongs to the generation of new age comic characters, who reach his fans across the world through completely online and electronic means.

Gmail jumps over 3 GB !!

I know , I know ..
with Yahoo offering unlimited storage space, Google jumping above 3 Gb is no big deal ...

For die-hard Gmail fans like me who were very close to 100% GMail inbox space utilization and who hate yahoo mail for its cluttered interface, distracting colour flashy ads and ineffective spam filters .... this is Good News ...

I was offline from Gmail for quite some time and lot of mails and forwards and newsletters accumulated in my mailbox … taking the used storage to almost 99% …. A full day spent in deleting mails took it back to 90% … since then I have been regularly filtering, deleting mails and maintaining the utilization at 90%

Suddenly I noticed the counter say … You are currently using 2640 MB (73%) of your 3608 MB …. the fall in % utilization made my heart leap .. with fears of a malicious virus deleting my g-mails …. A further look at the whole line indicated that the 73% was of 3608 MB and not of some 2980 MB I had been seeing since quite some time ….

It comes as a pleasant surprise for me and other diehard users that Gmail has finally crossed the 3 GB mark in its 3rd year … I guess either Google will keep it that way … increase a GB per year … or might simply go ahead and speed up their storage space clock to give more in coming years …

Well .. it could very well go ahead and give Unlimited storage space ..

Or Better still … I would prefer it giving a 1 TB storage space ….

I know 1 TB is smaller than a unlimited storage space .. but it sounds better
