The International Day of Happiness

TODAY, March 20 was established as the annual International Day of #Happiness by the United Nations General Assembly back in 2012 and all 193 United Nations member states have adopted a resolution calling for happiness to be given greater priority.

So what exactly is the International Day of Happiness?

It's a day to be happy, of course! duh!

Happiness is a fundamental human goal.

The UN General Assembly recognizes this

goal and calls for “a more inclusive, equitable

and balanced approach to economic growth that

promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”

It aims to make people around the world realize the

importance of happiness within their lives;

while focussed on global economics.

In my experience, contrary to popular belief and perception, Happiness is being taken pretty seriously.

I worked at Landmark Group from 2016 to 2020 (best time of my career). Landmark had the 'Happiness Movement' led by Nisha Jagtiani and a dedicated team. Not an initiative, not a project .. a movement. While happiness was celebrated every day, we had a specific day every month where all employees would wear the Happiness T-shirts and we would have fun activities at our workplaces - not just offices but also in our stores, restaurants, warehouses etc. With time, the fun activities transformed into more meaningful activities where empowerment, achievements, relationships, openness were celebrated, promoted and encouraged - leading to not just fun, but true happiness.

The UAE has a Minister of State for Happiness and Wellbeing.. I am not sure there, any other country has something similar. A Minister and an entire government department dedicated to the happiness of the people in the country. They have taken happiness very serious'ly :)

You should also know that FINLAND is the Happiest Country in the World; goes without saying that the citizens are the happiest in the world. People in Finland are happy because their society has developed what they call an infrastructure of happiness. It includes healthcare, education, the economy, human rights, democratic governance and a culture of volunteerism along with high levels of trust and freedom.

So, now that you know about the happy company,

the happiness minister & the happiest country;

let's bring Happiness closer to Home.

To YOU. Yes. Up. Close. &. Personal.

Are YOU Happy?

Is your Team Happy?

Is your Dept/Function Happy?

Is your Organization Happy?

While every company strives to be the Best Place to Work ... How much of it has Happiness in focus?

Many parameters go into making a Best Place to Work ... how much weightage for Happiness?

What are you doing to make your environment Happier?

At work, At Home, In your society?

Happy surroundings = Happy You.

"If you want to make everyone happy, Don't be a Leader. Sell ice cream. ~ Steve Jobs" :)

Did the pic make you smile ??
