The Dichotomy of Leadership and Life
Because Humans are incredibly intelligent and supremely stupid at the same time, we can be simultaneously dichotomous at the same time.
We can be incredibly logical and believe in ghosts at the same time.
We can be super confident and a nervous wreck at the same time.
We can be gentle and strict with someone at the same time.
We can be ambitious as well as relaxed at the same time.
We can love and hate someone at the same time.
We can be happy and sad at the same time.
Key to unravelling this mystery is to understand
the fact that the 'opposites' we are thinking about
are not actually opposites but just two states of mind
that we can simultaneously experience in the same moment.
We humans are complex beings and the simple interesection of
logic and emotions gives rise to most complicated mental scenarios.
So don't take things way too seriously. Live in the moment.
Don't be overwhelmed by thhe multitude of emotions.
Focus on them one at a time to understand them.
No one understands You like You do. In the same way,
No one understands someone else like they do themselves.
Don't break your head trying to understand someone completely.
And don't expect someone else to understand you completely either.
Leadership roles will present these dichotomous challenges quite often.
You will be working with people who are brilliant & difficult at same time.
You will have challenges which pose a strategic & moral challenge together.
You will have to take layoff decisions and motivate the remaining team,
while going for heavy marketing spend in the middle of cost cutting.
Your best guy is threatening to leave without a big salary raise,
and so now you have nothing left for the rest of the team.
Leadership is navigating that tightrope and balancing.
Leadership is about being OK with the ambiguity.
It is about being OK with NOT knowing answers.
Leadership is way beyond every comfort zone.
