The sure-shot way of failing an interview!

Would you go to an examination unprepared?

Without reading the subject books? Without knowing the chapters or syllabus?

Would you even want to attempt the exam?

Then why do people do that with their Interviews?

Why do candidates enter the interview meeting without studying for it?

Its almost as if they are consciously trying to fail at the interview.

And I must say, this is a sure shot way of doing it.

KYC is crucial – Know Your Company and the specific Job

When you are invited to a Job Interview, you know two important things that define your scope. The company you are interviewed for and the role/job you are getting interviewed for.

With this knowledge of the ‘subject and the syllabus’; why would you not prepare for the ‘exam’ (the interview)? And it’s not even difficult.

Read up about the company/organization - no need to memorize or remember in detail but get an idea of the company.

1.      Visit the company website, read its history, study its products and services, check out its management team, its vision and mission statement, etc.

2.      Google the company and read up about why has it been in news lately, any significant awards it has won recently, etc.

Now, read up about the role/job you are getting interviewed for. This is crucial.

1.      First is the Job Description (JD) which is the organization's attempt at listing down all that is expected from the job holder. Yes, it is only an ‘attempt’

2.      Understand what you have just read. Yes. I had to make this a separate bullet point since people kind of assume and ignore this one, having done the first one.

3.      Bring in your experience and understanding to the JD and add to it if possible

With the above, you have created a foundation on which you will build the tower of YOU on the interview.

You know the organization to some extent and have a fairly good idea of what you are getting interviewed for and what is expected out of you.

Now you bring YOURSELF to this foundation and build on it.

The foundation built with a little research and reading is crucial as the entire tower you are building (in the interview) stands on it, depending on it. Go wrong with the foundation is, and the tower will fall before completion.
