And You thought Slavery was abolished
And you thought slavery was abolished and universally condemned.
A 13-year-old boy was sold and it has made national news headlines.
Words are critical.
Words are powerful.
Words are important.
Words have meaning.
All by themselves and
in combination with others
And how you put the words
together can change the meaning.
One news report says: IPL Mega Auction: Vaibhav Suryavanshi becomes youngest pick in IPL history, "bought" by RR for ₹1.1 crore
Another one says: IPL Auction 2025: 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi "sold" for Rs 1.1 crore to Rajasthan Royals, becomes youngest player signed in IPL history
What kind of language is this? sold, bought??
Is this what is happening?? Is this how you talk about a person? That too a National Daily.
(Some might argue that Slavery is exactly what is happening but that's a completely different conversation)
BUT then that's #Journalism in this century.
Write something catchy, eyeball-grabbing.
Make your headline and hook click-baity.
That's how you get the 'views' and 'likes'
And then there is: IPL Auction 2025 highlights: Rishabh Pant costliest, Vaibhav Suryavanshi at 13 becomes youngest to get an IPL contract
And I am happy to say that sanity exists in some corners .. in this case, it was MINT
But what about its impact on average
people in a professional environment?
With constant exposure to such nonsense,
the language of people is bound to be impacted.
People will become less careful with their choice
of words and how they put the words together.
When meaning begins to go for a toss in the
corporate world, things can be disastrous.
Imagine a Manager or Leader sending out
a communication or even a single statement
to their team & indulging in poor choice of words.
Misinterpretation, Misrepresentation, Misinformation.
So many misses could take place. Total Misunderstanding.
Poor choice of words could become a POSH/DEI nightmare.
So a quick note to all the Leaders
Words are critical. Words are powerful.
Words are important. Words have meaning.
Think Twice & Use Wisely. Communicate Well.
