AI is the new Lion in the Jungle. You are the Gazelle.
AI is the new Lion in the Jungle. You, my dear friend, are the Gazelle.
Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke realised that his internal memo at Shopify was being leaked and misrepresented, so he shared it publicly and put it in the right perspective. And yet the world is divided over it :)
Every professional should read and re-read that memo and internalise it. The message has several layers, and reading alone will not reveal them. I encourage professionals to discuss, brainstorm, and dissect the memo over an intellectual tea/coffee break.
AI fluency is your new baseline skill.
The important question to ask now is,
"Are you upgrading or outsourcing your relevance?"
Tobi Lütke’s internal memo at Shopify sounds like a wake‑up call for every company and every career professional:
Sharing some of my thoughts based on the memo (and these can serve as triggers for your conversations too).
1. AI as natural reflex, not a research project.
The best talent now treats Chat GPT, Copilot, and Claude the way coders treat a compiler—always on, always iterating. Waiting for a formal rollout policy is the modern form of procrastination.
2. Performance ≠ effort × time; it’s skill × AI multiplier.
When the tool is 10×, average input becomes elite output. That means the gap between “good” and “great” going to widen.
3. Headcount gets questioned.
Before your team asks for resources, leadership will ask: Could an autonomous agent do this faster, cheaper, better? Build that answer into your business case or watch your budget disappear.
4. Continuous learning stops being a platitude.
If you are not climbing, you are sliding. Corporates must bake AI upskilling into objectives and reviews, and not treat it as a perk.
My thoughts for GenZ
- Your degree is now just a qualifier; your AI dexterity is the entry passcode.
- Treat prompting, context‑loading, and agent orchestration as core craft alongside communication and problem‑solving.
My thoughts for GenZ the Corporate Professionals and Entrepreneurs:
- Culture must shift from “we’re exploring AI” to “we prototype with AI by default.”
- Reward experimentation, share wins and fails, and make AI literacy a peer‑review item.
I am reminded of that famous African proverb:
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning, a lion wakes up.
It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve.
It doesn’t matter whether you are the lion or the gazelle—
when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”
AI is the new Lion in the Jungle.
You, my dear friend, are the Gazelle.
You gotta RUN!
I look forward to hear your thoughts on this ... What's your take on this?
