What's Your 2024 WOTY??
Every year, leading dictionaries and linguistic bodies of the world pick out a word (after considerable consideration of many choices) and christen it the Word of the Year (WOTY). This exercise is supposed to give us a view of the general intellectual consciousness of the world. So here's to the 2024 WOTY's by different publications.
"brain rot"
deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) - named the 2024 Word of the Year by Oxford University Press
“Manifest”
to dream or will something into existence, has been named the word of 2024 by Cambridge Dictionary
"Enshittification"
the gradual deterioration of a service of product — named the 2024 Word of the Year by Macquarie Dictionary.
'Brat'
'characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude', has been named Collins' Word of the Year 2024.
"demure"
reserved, modest, and shy (typically used of a woman) or (of clothing) giving a modest appearance. There was a 1200% increase in usage in digital web media after TikToker Jools Lebron popularised the phrase “very demure, very mindful” in a series of videos posted in early August. That made Dictionary.com select it as the Word of the year 2024
We all experience a shift in our language patterns every year as we get exposed to various media influences (including reading stories to our kids and coming across a word in those kiddie storybooks and falling in love with them).
What is YOUR very own personal WOTY that you seem to have been over-using this year?
My WOTY is tied between 'change' and 'coaching' :)
As a part-time 'Life and Career Transformation Coach' with a full time job of a 'Change Management Consultant' those are the two words that are in constant use by yours truly. :)
So .. What's your 2024 #WOTY?
