The First 13 weeks in a new job

The First 13 weeks in a new job in a new organization, a new role (promotion) or a new long-term project (within your current role) are absolutely crucial.

Spend the first 2 weeks

to understand the job/role/organization/project - essentially the context of your work.

Spend the next 2 weeks

to understand the entire stakeholder map associated with it.

Spend the next 2 weeks

understanding what is expected of you from all the stakeholders' perspectives.

Spend the next 2 weeks

to create your plan of action and make sure to think long-term as well as low-hanging fruits short term.

Spend the next 4 weeks

delivering on those low-hanging fruits and setting up systems, processes, and governance for long-term goals.

Spend the next 1 weeks

thinking about your long-term vision, mission and goals from what you have been entrusted with.

And yes, do get hold of the book 'The First 90 Days' by Michael Watkins - it's a good read while embarking on something new in your career.

And yes, consider mentoring and coaching for this period. It can help you plan your path effectively and help you course correct in real-time.
