The Education and AI battle is ON
I read an article about a university in UAE reinstating paper-pen exams to combat the ChatGPT threat.
We are at an inflexion point and the education system which has already been undergoing a reconsideration and redesign, is being subjected to the onslaught of the AI revolution in a manner that it is completely taken by surprise.
While the 'threat' of students using AI tools to submit assignments and answer their tests is Real; but so is the fact that these very same students are using and will use AI extensively in their daily life for personal as well as professional tasks. So by by banning the AI tools, are we preventing them from learning the right skills for their future???
But on the other hand, we know that early and over reliance on the tools leads to stunted growth of mental faculties.
With mobile phones, we lost the ability of remembering phone numbers which led us to not developing number-remember faculties - resulting in we not remembering any kind of long numbers.
With basic calculator being handy (as calculator or mobile phone again, and as excel at work) ... our mental faculties to perform calculations in the head diminished or did not develop. Numerous examples when people pull out the phone to do basic calculations.
The trouble is that without such basic mental faculties being developed, how do we scale up to develop far superior abilities over and above the AI.
The fear is that we might get dumber and dumber as the AI and Machine get smarter and smarter.
Which is when the 'losing jobs to AI' becomes a stark reality !!
While I personally support the idea of pen-paper test, I would suggest the addition of curriculum and tests that will help the generation to learn how to use AI and develop themselves beyond the AI capability - develop to the level where they can take an output from an AI and make it better !!
Thats where the jobs of the future are
