20 Years of Experience vs. 2 Days of Certification – Who Do You Call? With 20 years in Organizational Change Management, I find my profile sidelined because I lack a Change Mgmt. certification; while those with 2-5 years of experience and a short training get shortlisted. People who have gone through a two-day certification program with few years of experience and those who have done 'change management' as part of their (other) primary role get through to an Interview. And what's with Organizations creating a pretty long JD for Change Mgmt. profile seeking a world of experience for managing complex change in complex environment from a professional with 2 to 5 years of experience :) And then there are those who title their job posting as Change Management / Change Manager but as you dive into the JD, it starts to read like that of a Project Manager with 1-2 lines devoted to Change Management. Hmm ... so u could not get a budget approval for PM so thought of seeking an ambitious CM who dreams of becoming a PM? And then there are those .. well, enough of the rant !! Reality Check: Change Management is a serious role. Projects are often implemented without Change Management, but will the system implemented be adopted? That depends on how well the change is managed. Organizations pushing for work-life balance, empowerment, and leadership at all levels will struggle if they don’t invest in structured Change Management; losing engagement, adoption, and top talent. So What’s the Fix? - Every leader & manager must develop a change mindset - it’s no longer a niche skill. - Organizations must have dedicated Change professionals for major initiatives. - Leaders & HR should rethink hiring for crucial skills - don’t overvalue certifications at the cost of real expertise. Final Thought: Don’t hire a dog when you need a cat. Don’t hire a cat when you need a tiger. And yes, don’t hire a monkey.
