Why Prepare for that Role beyond the Interview

Image
Don't just Prepare for the Job Interview.  Prepare for that Role beyond the Interview instead.  (This post is an extended post from my post last week.)  During Job Interview coaching,  I work with corporate professionals  to help them crack their Job Interviews.  Internal promotions or a job in a new company Always Focus on the ROLE and not just on interview  The interview is an assessment of your capability  to play the role in question that you are interviewed for.  The past is used as a barometer to assess future performance BUT, always remember : they are interested in future & not in past. They are listening to you telling about your past with complete attention  only to translate it in their head to the future role that they have in mind.  Your past achievements mean nothing if they have no relevance to the role  FOCUS on the ROLE and not on YOURSELF.  Focus on Yourself only in context of the ROLE.  Bring the Role at the center of the conversation.  Before the interview

Professionals can break through their glass walls and ceilings with Coaching

Image
Mid and Senior Management Professionals can break through their glass walls and ceilings with Coaching.   For a typical mid and senior management corporate professional, there are several challenges at work. Many professionals, at this juncture in their career, get stuck and their career begins to stagnate as they do not get a promotion for 3+ years nor are they able to go across to other organizations with a promotion. Coaching could provide valuable assistance to break free from such a state and overcome career stagnation. Lets look at some of the challenges at this juncture of Life and Career (you could possibly identify with some): 1. Work-Life Balance: Balancing work responsibilities with personal life can be a struggle for many professionals. This challenge surfaces as both personal life as well as career begin to demand more time and attention; and at the same time, people want to give more time to personal lives, having sacrificed it in favor for career for too long and now t

Movie Recommendation for a change - Inside Out 2

Image
#InsideOut2 - The original Emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness are joined by new arrivals .. and its going to be a rollercoaster joyride.  I loved the movie Inside Out with  the personification of the Emotions  - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness And now I look forward to Inside Out 2  where more emotions join the bandwagon.  Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, Nostalgia,  When I read about all these 5 'new emotions';  my first reaction was how are these emotions 'new'?  And it hit it. The IO storyline is from a Kid's point of view  At an early age, they don't have much of these complex ones.  These come in much later as they mature and get competitive  (which is how we have designed their education system to be).  So it made sense …  And then something else hit me.  The Professional Corporate setting.   How we go through our own emotional  maturity in an average workplace to cope up.  Anxiety takes over and drives all the emotions.  Envy &am

The point where our dreams are fulfilled, your struggle begins

Image
#WeekendMusings : The whole Rishi Sunak Sky TV comment reminds me of the now-famous quote by actor Siddhant Chaturvedi  "Jahan hamare sapne poore hote hain wahan inka struggle shuru hota hai"  Translated as "The point where our dreams are fulfilled, your struggle begins"  It paints such a dramatically and drastically different and contrasting worldview of people coming from different walks of life, different economic and privileged strata of society.  And frankly, it is extremely difficult to have the view from the other side of the lake. You can't imagine what it is like if you have never experienced it. So you can be excused for not knowing what it feels like and if you don't have empathy for them.  BUT what does not get excused is the total lack of awareness about the existence of the other side and not being sensitive to their view and context.  As a Political Leader in a state/country,  it becomes unpardonable as you are responsible for making it rig

The First 13 weeks in a new job

Image
The First 13 weeks in a new job in a new organization, a new role (promotion) or a new long-term project (within your current role) are absolutely crucial.  Spend the first 2 weeks  to understand the job/role/organization/project - essentially the context of your work.  Spend the next 2 weeks to understand the entire stakeholder map associated with it.  Spend the next 2 weeks understanding what is expected of you from all the stakeholders' perspectives.  Spend the next 2 weeks to create your plan of action and make sure to think long-term as well as low-hanging fruits short term.  Spend the next 4 weeks delivering on those low-hanging fruits and setting up systems, processes, and governance for long-term goals.  Spend the next 1 weeks thinking about your long-term vision, mission and goals from what you have been entrusted with.  And yes, do get hold of the book 'The First 90 Days' by Michael Watkins - it's a good read while embarking on something new in your career.

Mirrors reflect Reflections - illusion or introspection?

Image
Mirrors reflect Reflections - illusion or introspection?  The picture was taken 8 years ago in a changing room of a retail store.  Kiddo was surprised with her infinite reflections in the Trial Room. Even I have tried looking over my shoulder to see how far did  the reflections go and what infinity looked like in there.  It's interesting. It's fascinating. It's intriguing. Isn't it?   But as I looked at this same picture this week,  a thought struck me about how we see Ourselves. Our view of ourselves is filtered by our perceptions,  which changes our thinking and therefore our actions, which further changes our thinking about ourselves when  we reflect on the situation and how we reacted in it which  further changes our thinking and our subsequent actions and  we end up in an infinite loop of us 'seeing' ourselves differently  every time, and hence changing ourselves a little every single time.  It's a chain reaction that's constantly happening  and w
